Maui Girl

Chewie
6-27-06
Chewie was a very young little girl who was hit
by a neighbor’s car in his driveway as he came home. He was going uphill and couldn’t see over the
hood of his car to realize she’d run out in front of him. Chewie’s 15 yr. old
master couldn’t afford the medical expenses that it would take to have the
surgery done on her, so he asked rescue to take her in so she could be
helped. Her pelvis was injured and a leg
needs to be fixed. We were told by the
emergency clinic that without surgery immediately, they would have to amputate
the leg. Chewie
was but 12 weeks old

UPDATE:
Chewie is now named Maui
Girl. The name was of her choosing. We were trying to think of a good name for
her and we started offering different names to her. Maui
Girl is the one she decided to answer to and did so consistently since we first
tried it out on her.

Maui Girl had her surgery on July 5. What at
first was thought to possibly be a three piece break turned out to be just a
two piece break. That was great news as it meant a
less drastic surgery needed to be done. It only took a pin and a couple of
wires to put her leg back together again. They did need to rebreak
the leg as it had already begun to heal incorrectly, but she is none the worse
for wear. Maui is getting along well, although
for now she is still hobbling along on three legs. And the fractures of the
pelvis apparently weren't fractures after all...it was just the way the X-rays
that had been done looked due to some obstructions that were present at the
time they were done. All in all, she is doing great! She will be going to her
foster home in another week, where her foster mom is a nurse who will be able
to give her lots of TLC and "professional" care. Thanks to all who
have come to Maui's aid and have asked about
her.
7/20/06: Today Maui got her stitches
out. The Dr. was amazed at how much of her hair had already grown back and was
very pleased with her progress. Next we begin swimming therapy with her...first, we need to set up the inflatable pool. :}}
After surgery, Maui was going to need
a new home. But we had an adoptive
parent who’d recently lost the fur child adopted from us to illness. We’d already asked if she’d like to foster
our fur kid for us as soon as we knew we’d be taking her into our rescue, and
she said she’d be happy to. Of course,
she asked if she might be able to adopt her rather than just foster her. So, how could we say no when we knew Chewie would have a wonderful new home where she’d be well
cared for—mom to be is a nurse? So, our
fur child no longer needs a home. Once
she is ready, she’ll be going to live with her new mom.

7/29/06: Now Maui
is enduring the tortures of PT (physical therapy). She took to the water like a natural, but
didn’t seem to want to stay in the pool by herself. As she went around the pool, she’d swim to
the edge and try to get out, but we’d gently guide her snout back away and told
her to go around again. She’d go around
alright, but only as far as the person standing at the opposite side of the
pool and try again. Poor baby, she just
couldn’t get a break…she would just get sent back around for a few more
laps. Below are some pictures of her
being tortured.

lap and then headed to other side of pool to try again

Maui resigned to fact she’s NOT getting out of
her PT quite yet
Maui went to live with
her new mom, but it didn't work out as she was just a bit too much of a handful
at the time, being that she was a young puppy with TONS of excess energy and
curious about everything in her world. So, Maui
ended up returning to her original foster home. Time has passed, and she has
become a tad more sedate and is a very delightful, sweet, loving, affectionate,
little girl who does have a few
issues with being adopted out as she is very attached to her foster
family. But she loves sleeping in bed
with you, loves to play, and loves to be hugged/scratched/roughhoused
with. She does well with people at
adoption days, but has not been quite as receptive toward people once in their
homes. She needs someone who has another
dog and is willing to take some time with her. If you think you have space in your home and hearts, please contact us
about adoption of this special baby at chowrescue@cox.net.
